Numbers 5-1

My top 25 albums of 2008 wraps up with the final five.

5) Soilent Green-Inevitable Collapse In The Presence Of Conviction
Certainly the album that grew on me the most in 2008.

4)Ancestors-Neptune with fire
Two long tracks packed with huge slices of sludge and killer jams.

3)The Devil and the sea-Heart vs. spine
Just crazy chaos flying everywhere.

2)Big Elf-Cheat the gallows
Spectacular blend of various 70's influences resulted in one of the most interesting albums of the year.

1)Byzantine-Oblivion Beckons
Byzantine were pushing the boundries of their genre with some of the most spectaular metal in some time. It's a shame that they broke up just as they were coming into their own.

The worst five albums of 2008 up next.

and I think Byzantine will be back; I know from receiving email from the wives of the band after I geeked on them in my review that the guys are doing their fatherly duties until they can get the chance to tour again....I'm in awe of these guys, putting out the album of the year and momentarily giving it up for their families

Ray-It was the first album I heard in 2008 and strangely enough it held on to be the top album.
Aren't several of the Byzantine guys now in other bands? I believe they are.

I had this feeling that you would have Byzantine in your Top 5 because I remember your review early in the year and I meant to pick it up but I never did. I have the Big Elf album but I haven't pulled it from the pile yet.

Steve-Pick up Byzantine and pull Big Elf from that stack. You won't be sorry.
